Varanasi's ghats are set to witness a rare spectacle this October — reportedly titled "Wings Over Ganges," an Indian Air Force aerial display marking the IAF's 94th anniversary, with aircraft flying low over the river near Namo Ghat. Here is everything you need to know: the exact dates, timing, where the event starts, what to expect in the skies, and the best spots in the city to watch it for free.
The Varanasi Air Show, reportedly titled "Wings Over Ganges," brings a large-scale aerial flying display to the skies above the Ganga to mark the Indian Air Force's 94th anniversary. It is being described as the IAF's first aerial display of this scale held over the Ganga — last year's edition was reportedly held over the Brahmaputra in Guwahati. The show is expected to be organised jointly by the Indian Air Force (Central Air Command), the Uttar Pradesh government and the Varanasi district administration, with crowds in the range of roughly 20–30 lakh (2–3 million) visitors anticipated across the display days.
Because the display takes place over open water, it is visible from a wide stretch of the riverfront, not just from the main venue — which is good news if you want to watch it for free without entering a crowded, high-security area.

Pre-event reports point to a very large flying display — close to 100 aircraft in total — with a line-up expected to include:
Reference photos below identify the aircraft types and display team; they are not photographs of the Varanasi event. Operators and variants shown may differ from those participating.
Rafale, Su-30MKI, MiG-29, Mirage 2000, Jaguar and LCA Tejas.
C-17 Globemaster, C-130, C-295, AN-32, AEW&C and Dornier aircraft, along with a vintage Dakota.
Chinook, Mi-17, ALH Mk-III, Rudra, the Sarang helicopter display team, and a Navy Kamov-31.
The Surya Kiran aerobatic team, flying Hawk jets reportedly out of Varanasi Airport for the show, is expected to be the centrepiece of the display, alongside Hawk and Kiran trainers.
Several named flying formations have reportedly been planned, though the exact composition of some is yet to be announced:
| Opening formation | A C-17 leads in, followed by nine Hawk jets introducing the Surya Kiran team |
| Omkar | Three Mi-17 helicopters carrying the national flag and showering flower petals |
| Tridev | A joint Army, Navy and Air Force helicopter formation |
| Finale | Rafale, Tejas and the Surya Kiran team together |
| Other named formations | Kashi, Varun, Kedar, Hanuman, Rudra and Bhagirathi — composition not yet announced |
This line-up is based on pre-event reports and is subject to change by the Indian Air Force. The final flying sequence is usually confirmed only a few days before the show.

Arrive well before 12:00 PM to find a good spot, as crowds are expected to build up through the morning on each show day. The actual flying activity is expected to last around 90 minutes within this window — exact start and end times can shift depending on weather and clearances.
The event is centred on Namo Ghat, one of Varanasi's newer and largest riverfront ghats — a stretch of roughly 1.5 km between Rajghat and Adi Keshav Ghat, opened in November 2024 after a rebuild reported to have cost around ₹91 crore, and it includes a helipad. Namo Ghat is easily recognisable by its large "Namaste" sculpture and open riverfront plaza, which makes it a natural gathering point for an event like this.
For the air show itself, reports indicate the ghat is handed over to Air Force control from around 16 October, with public access restricted in the run-up to and during the event — which is exactly why watching from just outside Namo Ghat, or from another ghat altogether, is the practical choice for most visitors.
You do not need to be at Namo Ghat itself to enjoy the show. Aircraft are expected to fly a corridor south from Namo Ghat towards Assi Ghat, passing over the river above several well-known ghats along the way, including Rajghat, Manikarnika Ghat and Dashashwamedh Ghat. Because of this, the display can be watched completely free of cost from almost any ghat in Varanasi that faces the river. Assi Ghat and Dashashwamedh Ghat are expected to be the most popular free viewing points, so arrive early if you choose either of these.
If you'd rather avoid crowds altogether, any quieter ghat a little further from Namo Ghat — on either side of the river frontage — will still let you watch the flypast comfortably, just from a greater distance. Some ghat-side hotels and homestays also have rooftop or sky-view terraces; it's worth asking which direction the terrace faces before relying on it for a clear view.
This is a general plan based on pre-event reports, not an official schedule — actual timings on 22, 23 and 25 October may vary.
Expect tighter security and some disruption to normal routines around the show dates:
By air: Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport is reportedly also being used as a base for the show, so check with your airline for any schedule changes around the display dates. By rail: Varanasi Junction (Cantt) or Banaras (Manduadih) stations. By road: Varanasi is well connected by highway to Lucknow, Ayodhya, Prayagraj and Bodh Gaya.
