Lord Bhairav is a fierce and powerful manifestation of Lord Shiva. In Kashi, Lord Kaal Bhairav holds the title of Kotwal — the divine chief guardian of the entire city. The Ashta (eight) Bhairava deities are his eight directional manifestations, each enshrined in their own ancient temple across Varanasi. Completing darshan of all eight in one day — the Ashta Bhairav Yatra — is considered one of the most powerful spiritual acts possible in Kashi. According to scripture, a devotee who completes this circuit with devotion is freed from the cycle of birth and death and attains liberation in the holy city of Kashi.

Our driver will pick you up from your hotel, Varanasi Airport, or Railway Station. The yatra begins with a brief stop at Shri Kaal Bhairav Temple (Vishweshwarganj) — the Supreme Kotwal of Kashi — to seek his blessings before entering the Ashta Bhairav circuit. We then board the E-Rikshaw for the inner-city temple circuit.
The first Bhairava of the Ashta circuit. Ruru Bhairava is enshrined in Bansphatak — one of the oldest quarters of Varanasi. The word "Ruru" refers to a divine deer, and this form of Bhairav is associated with speed and alertness. Devotees offer mustard oil lamps and black sesame seeds.
Located in Pandey Haveli — the historic residential area near Dashashwamedh Ghat. Chand Bhairava represents the moon-like calm force that destroys ignorance. This temple is a peaceful, intimate shrine tucked within the old havelis.
Asitang (also Ashtang) Bhairava is located near Hanuman Ghat on the banks of the Ganga. This Bhairava form is associated with the element of space and is one of the primary directional guardians. The ghat setting adds a serene, powerful atmosphere to the darshan.
Located in Kalika Gali in the heart of Chowk — Varanasi's ancient market district. Krodhan Bhairava represents controlled divine wrath that destroys evil. The temple is embedded within the dense urban fabric of old Banaras, accessible only through narrow winding lanes.
Kapal Bhairava is enshrined at Maidagin — a bustling central locality of Varanasi. "Kapal" means skull, and this form represents liberation from the cycle of death and rebirth. Darshan of Kapal Bhairava is believed to grant freedom from the fear of death.
Located near Harishchandra Ghat — one of Kashi's two cremation ghats (where the sacred fire burns eternally). Samhar Bhairava is the "destroyer" form — the energy of dissolution. Darshan here is profoundly moving, situated at the ghat where ancient Kashi's relationship with death and liberation is most visible.
Near Manikarnika Ghat — the most sacred cremation ground in Hinduism where Lord Shiva himself is said to whisper the Taraka mantra into the ears of the dying. Bheeshan (meaning "terrific" or "fearsome") Bhairava guards this most sacred transition point between life and liberation.
The final and most distant Bhairava temple — located at Lal Chak, Kashipura, on the sacred Panchkroshi pilgrimage route approximately 30 km from central Varanasi. We travel by AC cab for this leg. Unmatt (meaning "intoxicated with divine energy") Bhairava represents the ecstatic, liberated aspect of Bhairav. Completing darshan here marks the end of the sacred circuit. Return to Varanasi city for drop-off.
